Wonderland - Kinect Installation

Project Overview

Wonderland is an interactive installation that allows users to interact with a projection of a wonderland world through motion and gestures. The installation is inspired from the book Alice in Wonderland. I focused on the interactions, story and getting the Kinect to reliably respond to motion. The visual design was not a focus for this initial prototype. This was an individual project that I designed and built.

How it works

Identifying metrics and their impact on fraud

  • User stands in front of a Kinect facing a projection of a wonderland world.

  • Kinect detects the user and the user can see his silhouette in the projection

  • The user can interact with various elements projected in the world through gestures and movements

Process

  • Brainstorming

  • Learning how to use the Kinect and Processing

  • Narrowed down on top 3 idea’s

  • Critiqiue

  • Refining Ideas  – Decided on one idea

  • Development begins

  • Demo of rough working installation

  • Critique

  • Further refinement of working installation

  • Critique

  • Final installation displayed at an exhibition

The Installation

Graphics of the environment

I used a  combination of realistic looking graphics and 2d cartoon graphics are used

  • Realistic graphics give a sense of immersion. They cannot be interacted with.

  • 2d cartoon graphics create a sense of playfulness. All 2d cartoon images can be interacted with.

Some of the landscape elements used here are

  • Trees moving in the wind and almost glowing. This adds to how the world is strange looking

  • Grass is flashy  and changes color to create a psychedelic vibe

  • A star spinning out of control adds to the overall feel of strangeness and craziness

  • Clouds are moving and snow is constantly falling to give the impression that the world is alive and dynamic

User Detection and Immersion

Once the user is detected the following is added to his silhouette to make him feel like he’s part of the world

  • Mad hatters hat, bow tie

  • White rabbits watch

  • Queen of hearts card

Sequence of Events

User enters wonderland and his silhouette is projected in the world. He progresses from left to right through the world. The following is a description of what happens when the user interacts the various elements in the world.

Events are placed in this order are generally based on the sequence in the book. Alice finally leave wonderland when the queen shouts off with your head and she wakes up.

Takeaways

I did not have much knowledge of coding coming into this project. I had to learn processing in a short span and time and experiment a lot. Getting the Kinect to work and having the installation detection your motion and respond accurately was extremely challenging. Through lots of reading, trial and error and late nights I was able to get it done. This might not the prettiest project but it was one of the most challenging ones I've worked on and I learnt a lot. I taught me to be resourceful and always push myself.
